Early March Loot - Mega-Powered!Early March Loot - Mega-Powered!Loot

This month's loot is not a big one, but it does feature an old figure from one of my favorite franchises, an unconventional figure, and a figure that checks all kinds of my moe boxes. Sounds interesting, right?

First up is an ancient (2007) figure from one of my favorite anime that I've been hunting for a while, Kotobukiya's Mai Kawasumi ITEM #24 (it's oddly satisfying to add items to the collection whose numbers in the MFC database are in the single or double digits :) ) from the Kanon ENTRY #3 anime and visual novel, and I found one on eBay for a really cheap price. I suspect this was mainly because the figure box was just beat to hell-the corners were all dog-eared, the top flap was ripped, and all the windows are on the verge of falling out of the box, but since I unbox all of my figures, that doesn't matter much to me.

It's a very simple figure, but I always liked Mai, and the uniforms from Kanon are quite distinctive and attractive. Her optional bunny ears are a cute little nod to some backstory as well.

Next up is a figure that I had been undecided about for quite awhile, Union Creative's "Ribbon Doll" Ryomou Shimei ITEM #494856 from the well-traveled Ikki Tousen ENTRY #10 franchise.

This figure attempts to give Ryomou ENTRY #1860 a more realistic and non-anime look. At first, I wasn't sold on the look (these more realistic figures sometimes leave me with the impression that they are not really the character in question, but rather a cosplayer dressing up as the character), but in time I gained appreciation for this figure, in part because of Ryomou's very lean, muscular, and fit appearance. She is ripped, but still feminine.

It's not a perfect figure by any means. Ryomou's skin tone is very pale and under certain lighting, her skin has almost a yellowish hue to it (compare to the skin tone in the box photos), but it is a very interesting figure and I will probably write a review of her one of these days.

Next up is a figure from a line that in retrospect I probably should have started collecting from the get-go, Damtoys' "Mega Power" from their After School Arena series of figures.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/03/2650247.jpeg

I had thought about getting the Shadow (AmiAmi link, since these figures are not allowed in the MFC database - www.amiami.com/... ) from this line, but I decided not to, a decision which I came to regret and so when this particular offering showed up in AmiAmi's sale section, I grabbed her.

She hits an awful lot of my moe points with her cute face and cheerful expression, the large chest+small bikini top combo, and the variety of arms that she is carrying (bazooka, hand grenade, and a handgun). Really, the only knock on this figure is that her scale might not be quite the 1/7 that is advertised (she's more like a large 1/8).

She also reminds me quite a bit of one of my favorite characters, Lynette Bishop ENTRY #2035 from Strike Witches ENTRY #2, as they have similar facial features and similar body types. Her similarity to Lynette almost certainly was a factor in my decision to buy this figure, and it turned out quite nice, enough so that I am now tempted to be on the lookout for Shadow and some of the other figures in this line. Now, if only MFC would allow these figures in the database...

So that's it for early March, and as always...

THANKS FOR READING!

POLL TIME!!!

After School Arena is not of Japanese origin, and for this reason, the figures in that line are not allowed in the MFC database. However, there are more and more such anime-styled figures being made, many of which (like Damtoys' Mega Power) can be purchased from all the big Japanese shops. So the question is...

Should MFC relax the rules to allow non-Japanese origin figures in the database if those items are sold by Japanese retailers?

78%Yes.
8%No.
14%I'm undecided.

Maakie1 month ago#94038275Oh wow, I really like that After School Arena figure! Apparently the first one in that line was quite bad, so I didn't pay much attention anymore to newer releases. Good to see they are now making better ones! Shadow looks good so far as well!
Also, nice loot! :)

I saw some of the same negative comments about the first couple of figures in the After School Arena line, and some comments about Shadow's scale being smaller than claimed kind of scared me off from that figure, but I know wish I would have gotten that one, as the black bodysuit and her ninja-like appearance is quite cool.

Mega Power turned out well, although her scale is definitely smaller than the listed 1/7, and I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how get her backpack properly installed.

setokaibaswife1 month ago#93464402Those figures are all wonderful, you have great tastes. I especially love the first one and I can relate to the feeling that there's something special about those early numbered entries!
About your question, it's a hard one. I can see why the rule is in place, but in my opinion sometimes it's a bit too strict. For example, I wanted to add some goods from the "Love and Producer" series, they were merchandise for the Japanese anime made by a Japanese studio and they were made by a Japanese manufacturer and sold by a Japanese store. However, I had my entry removed and was told that I can't add goods because the original source was a Chinese mobile game (that has since gone global including Japanese, and had an anime made from it) so... yeah that one baffled me and still kind of does. ;_; I do understand why the rules are so strict though, it would be easy for this website to lose it's purpose without them.

These days I am always on the lookout for Air and Kanon figures, as many of those items are getting harder to find, although it surprises me that there are not more figures from those franchises. I always hoped that a proper scale figure would get made of Kanon's Shiori ENTRY #2069, but that's not going to happen...

I sort of understand the reason that MFC doesn't allow figures of a non-Japanese origin, as I can see scenarios where the site gets flooded with random junk, but it seems like it would make sense to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis, particularly when an item is proposed for addition to the database by a long-term user.

D_A_R1 month ago#93464384Nice haul! I really like the look of those after school arena figures, especially Shadow & Elf. Frog Lady looks pretty cool too, but I think it would be really hard to make her fit in with any other figures.

Elf caught my eye when she first came out, but I let that one pass since there was little mention of it on here, and I did not realize that After School Arena was going to spawn an entire line of figures. I'll definitely be on the lookout for Elf and Shadow preowned going forward.

I agree about Frog Lady. The wetsuit is a very cool look, but she just wouldn't match well with anything else in my collection.
