A love letter to the JJBA Chara Heroes lineA love letter to the JJBA Chara Heroes lineReview

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Chara Heroes: some love them, many hate them.

In my 2020 loot post, I mentioned that I omitted the part about these figures because it ended up being too long and sidetracked the loot article quite a bit. These are the elusive missing pages.

The very prolific Chara Heroes collectable figure line is something that I've seen many JJBA fans consider quite cursed. I've seen the series be dismissed more times than I could count, many mocking it or calling it ugly due to the unconventional nature of it's character stylization, but I decided found it quirky enough to buy a few figures. One thing that this series undoubtedly has going for it is the fact that it features just about every single character that appeared in JJBA parts 1-6. Hell, even my man Kenny G got an appearance! ITEM #47727

Of course being a store exclusive, the DIO's Mansion/Kenny G figure is far too expensive for me to justify buying it, I've seen it go for as much as $100. Purely due to that price, I'm guessing that these are probably much more favoured in Japan than they are in the west.

The characters I was most interested in getting were largely from part 6.
I got them, loved them, and ordered more.
I currently only have 11, but I certainly don't intend to stop there, I just put the interest on hold until I find a better way to display them.

The character that initially made me want to buy one of these figures was Johngalli A.
Yeah, remember Johngalli A? I think Johngalli A is neat and interesting and I think more people should remember Johngalli A. ITEM #109451

All in all, he's not the best example of a Chara Hero figure, although I think that the detail on Manhattan Transfer is really nice and makes its abstract shape instantly recognizable. I just wanted to mention him first because, well, he was the catalyst. Let's go on to some more interesting ones!

As I stated, I largely ordered part 6 character figures, among my favourites being Ungalo ITEM #118162, Donatello Versus ITEM #118164 and Rikiel ITEM #118163

I really love the detailing on some of these figures. An example I want to point to is Bohemian Rhapsody on Ungalo. These figures are very small and I'm very bad with the camera (sorry), so it's hard to capture, but the Bohemian Rhapsody characters are sculpted very cleanly in Ungalo's base. They are super tiny, but immediately recognizable as Pinocchio, little goat and a few of the 7 dwarves.

Another thing I greatly appreciate with this figure line is some of the colour palettes they went with. Personally I really hate many of the character palettes that Shueisha chose for the digitally colourized version of Stone Ocean, and I think many Chara Heroes figures present a MUCH superior palette.

For example, I think both Rikiel and Donatello Versus look much nicer in this iteration than they do in the JOJO-D manga, even with minor colour differences;

https://i.ibb.co/WpqSrGQ/f844269e-e422-460f-9e1e-5d096b71280b.png

Firstly, I love the choice of making Rikiel more blue-adjacent and Donatello more pink with his hair stripe. They are also somewhat similarly colour-coded in the manga, but other colours, like Donatello's stark yellow hair, meddle with a cleaner colour palette.

I am a big fan of the shiny lipstick on Rikiel and the overall extremely simple palette on him. While I do somewhat miss the dalmatian spots, the overall palette is much more pleasant than in the digital manga.

I also really want to give a special mention to how cool Underworld's dynamic pose is from the front and the back;

Next, I of course also bought Part 6 DIO ITEM #118160, and a Part 1 Dio later as a treat ITEM #50348

There are a few things I want to point out with the Part 6 DIO first. Seriously these tiny figures deserve so much more love, because the attention to detail in them really impressed me.

The specific scene that this figure is referring to is DIO and Pucci's discussion about Surivor, as we can see by the figure holding a model ship. This is the scene in the digitally coloured manga:
https://i.ibb.co/0BM3X9Z/xa3.png

Please note that Shueisha COMPLETELY dismissed the fact that DIO is a vampire, and put him in the direct reach of sunlight.

On the other hand, the figure is coloured in dark colours, implying that he's cloaked in shadow. The character's lore has actually been taken into account, which definitely showcases that thought was put into the making of this figure line.

Another thing I love about this specific figure is the carpet, which has a very nice paisley pattern on it;
https://i.ibb.co/4Kgv2yg/Untitled.png

This wasn't even in the manga. The artist just decided to add this detail for the hell of it, and I ALWAYS respect that. When I see something added in a piece of art that absolutely no one would miss if it wasn't there, it really makes me appreciate the art so much more.

The part 1 Dio figure replicates his vampiric reappearance at the full moon, with the slightly translucent moon behind the figure adding a really cool scene effect.

Other figures I got so far are; Diver Down ITEM #109460, Miu Miu ITEM #118170, C-Moon ITEM #118159, and D an G with Yo-Yo Ma ITEM #118169. I don't care that much for D an G and Yo-Yo Ma, but they were part of a batch I bought.

https://i.ibb.co/n0vhqLX/sfdsgsfdakhjlsgh22.png

I specifically want to call out Miu Miu for being another great example of a a colour palette that looks much cooler and much more stylish than the manga counterpart. She is one of my favourite Chara Hero figures, I absolutely love her sculpt and palette.
https://i.ibb.co/dtSg1T6/New-Canvas.png

I also love that most stands, like Diver Down and C-Moon for example, are made of more translucent plastic, giving them a more supernatural/ghostly look.

My FAVOURITE Chara Heroes figure though, has got to be the Sun; ITEM #32483
The sculpting of the rays is very nice and replicates Araki's style really well, and also I just think it's hilarious that it exists lmao it's just the freaking sun
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/13/2388020.png

Pretty much every single one of the Chara Heroes figures is sculpted with a lot of attention to detail, especially for their tiny size, many of them have dynamic posing and interesting texturing in the base, and most of them have colour palettes that are far superior to those in the manga or sometimes even the anime.

When I saw these for the very first time I remember thinking they were weird and ugly, but I genuinely can't put myself back into that mindset, I can't look at these figures and understand what it was about them that I found ugly. I am completely, thoroughly warmed up to them.

So yeah, Chara Heroes collectible JoJo figures?
Underrated. Do not deserve the mockery I've seen them get. Can't wait to get more.

fantasy_trance2 months ago#95194123I love this! This was a good promotion for these figures, ha ha! I've only seen these guys in passing and I thought you were talking about the World Collectible line and I was confused.
These Chara Heroes are pretty unique, but I think I like them too. Maybe I will pick up a few of the main characters. Could always use more figures of Jotaro and Joseph and Giorno <3

I'm glad to hear!! :D
The world collectable line is also nice (i have 2), but nowehere as unique, prolific, and i'd even say iconic, as the chara heroes line

the main characters can sometimes run pretty high with these (i consider 10-20€ high for a figure of this size at least), since as i said, i am fairly certain that this line might be loved in japan

personally i'm definitely looking to get one of the joseph figures, specifically this one ITEM #25919

AcePlatinum2 months ago#95192726I personally do not like the style myself but I do admire the artistic liberties they took with some characters. I also appreciate that they cover minor characters or ones that have very few figures. But another reason why I don't get them is cause there are so many of them and I know that I would try to get them all (like Pokémon) and spend even more money in the jojo merch hell. ....I need to limit what I can get xD
Oh man yea there are a LOT of them and they can get really expensive really fast lmao

MrDKJ2 months ago#95191578I always wanted to pick up some of these, but missed them as they were coming out.
I like that this line went with their own unique color palettes for the characters.
While I always associate Hermes with the the green color palette you typically see her in, I always loved the red one she got for this line.
I really want to eventually get my hands on the Ermes one, the red/black/tan palette with purple lipstick looks fantastic on her!
i can't decide if i love it or the SAS ITEM #236249 palette more, but i really dislike her digital manga colours, i hope the anime stays far away from it lmao

setokaibaswife2 months ago#95188694I think they are interesting to look at! A little unusual sure but that doesn't make them ugly. I didn't realise they could be so detailed since I've never actually owned one myself.
Most of the hate i've seen comes from twitter, I'm really unsure what the general consensus about them is among jojo fans on mfc, but twitter is a hostile ground for poor chara heroes u_u
