I may be a JoJo connoisseur who spends most of his time thinking, writing, talking about and drawingfollowmeontwitter big scary burly men, however I also have a super hidden secret that no one could ever figure out about me by merely looking at my work and how I present myself; I like cute things. Like a lot.
And you know what's cute? Small colourful horses are cute.
And you know what's also cute? Stories about friendship are super cute
And you know what ELSE is cute? me talking too much
View spoilerHide spoilerA redemption arc in which the character who was a villain in the previous story is trying to be better and is technically accepted by her new friends but she is clearly not fully included and you’ll see her hanging out with the friend group all the time but she feels too guilty about what she did to try to include herself so she’s just kinda there and it’s really sad bc if that ain’t relatable, oof
like, sure, i never turned into a demon and tried turning all my classmates into zombies, but i sure as hell know what it feels like to be that member of the group that’s just there but never really included
yeah the other girls are nice to sunset and absolutely do see her as a friend, but not enough of a friend to even ask her if she wants to be in the band…
also i really like that the character who was a villain in the previous movie doesn’t immediately get a 100% acceptance in the next movie where she’s good, bc everyone in school is still wary of her! but then she ACTUALLY redeems herself!! and people ACTUALLY know she's kind and good and they ACTUALLY like her!! that's super fucking cute.

INTRO 2: ABOUT FIGURES THIS TIME
When Kotobukiya first released the Pinkie Pie figure ITEM #675659 I was very pleasantly surprised and intrigued to see how the rest of the mane six would turn out! I LOVED how Pinkie turned out, her hair, her pose, her COLOURS looked absolutely adorable!!
Only problem I had was that, well... Pinkie was not my favourite pony, not by far. So I passed on that figure and eagerly waited for when my favourite mane six girl will be revealed; Rarity!
Eventually all the mane six designs were revealed, Rarity ITEM #806148 of course among them, and well... mmh.
The pose I didn't like at all, I don't like back-facing figures since I want both the outfit AND the face to be seen properly at once. Her outfit... does not work for me either. I wish they stayed closer to the Equestria Girls design and give her poofy sleeves and tall boots, anything to take this very basic look up a notch tbh. To my disappointment, she is by far the most boring figure in the MLP Bishoujo line.
So with Rarity being the only one I was initially interested in and her not turning out well at all, I sadly accepted that I will just have to pass this very exciting and unexpected line of a show that I really, really love.
THE FIGURE ANNOUNCEMENT
I cannot overstate my shock and excitement when a silhouette of Sunset Shimmer was revealed at Wonfes2020. I NEVER expected this line to go beyond the mane six. I NEVER expected my best girl to be included.
Rarity may be my favourite mane six girl- however she's not my best girl.
When the art for Sunset was finally revealed, I was a little bit disappointed, since I REALLY hoped for her to be wearing her Phoenix / Friendship Games outfit, with a blue frilly dress paired with pants and a cool jacket;

But the revealed art showed her in her first outfit;

Furthermore, I was very displeased with the choice of pink on the concept art. It's the worst shade of pink and the worst part of Sunset's design in the movies (which is why I greatly preferred her second outfit)
However, all my reservations disintegrated once the official photo of a coloured figure was revealed.

That, my people, is a good pink. A good strong warm pink. The choice to change the shade of pink on this figure cemented it for me, I am preordering Sunset Shimmer ITEM #945903.
REVIEW, FINALLY, CHRIST
Sunset's box design is absolutely adorable.
It gives a very cute call-back to the retro legacy of My Little Pony by placing the character's name into a rainbow. This is noteworthy because My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the series that this figure is based on, didn't have this style of title, it's a callback to the very first on-screen iteration of the My Little Pony title, even the font somewhat resembles the old MLP font;
I just think that's really neat!!
I also love the brightness of the box, with most of it being white with a very light pattern of Sunset's cutie mark and sparkles. All in all, the box is very lovely <3
Now, let's look at the figure, starting from the top.
Firstly, because I've seen a few people complain about this, and while I understand their woes, I personally absolutely LOVE the warm colours on this figure. I love her darker tanned skin, and I don't think it looks too unnatural as some people criticize. Being a character with such a close association with fire, I think having a tan really suits Sunset and I don't think it makes her clash with the rest of the girls too much.
Her face looks super cute and I really love that they decided to give her a collar, since it leans more in to the somewhat vague rock/biker aesthetic she had going on.
I think the hair is my only complaint about this figure. The sculpting is a bit rough in places and there's some very light shading done with black spray in the back and I think that was a very poor choice, since it makes the colours look somewhat muddy.
Something I love a lot is that Kotobukiya really stayed faithful to the characters, since their Bishoujo series is not a stranger to going into a sexier direction (in their Horror series for example), but the pony girls are kept faithful to their teenage appearance and very PG origin with smaller/more natural bust sizes and no clothing that's too revealing.
The jacket is GORGEOUS and it's definitely one of my favourite parts of this figure. The zipper is really well detailed, as is the rim/stitch(?) of the collar. Nothing gives a character design more life than detailing in clothing does and I live for this.
Follow-up on the tasteful treatment of the pony girls; I really like that Sunset is wearing mini boxers, not panties. Another little thing that keeps the figure respectful to the character!
Speaking of detailing in character design, this is also the reason I always tend to give special attention to shoes in my reviews. Look at these kicks, aren't they absolutely stunning?? I do wish the painting was sharper, but I'm overall very smitten with the shoe design on this figure.
The pony version of Sunset looks great as well!!
One thing I want to point out is that her eyelashes are sculpted, not drawn on, which was a nice surprise!
The base is an absolute gem on this figure. I cannot overstate how much this piece of flat colourful plastic pulls the entire figure together, and I don't just mean physically. The figure is extremely warm and colourful from top to bottom, and this base REALLY seals the entire thing.
Sunset's pose overall is 100% perfect and adds so much for me to love.
LOOK at her. LOOK at my girl!!
I love the attitude and the confidence that radiate from her pose.
I really love this figure and I'm really glad I got to enjoy the MLP Bishoujo series in the end after all.
If I had to point out flaws, the previously mentioned muddy colouring of the back of her hair is probably my biggest one.
On the other hand, my favourite things about this figure is how they really leaned into Sunset's more rocker-like vibe.
By sliding the leather jacket off one shoulder they drew more attention to it due to the added asymmetric dynamic, and again, the detailing on the jacket is really one of this figure's highlights. Her boots also have a slight cowboy-esque vibe which I absolutely ADORE. The collar is also a really cool touch.
Initially I was disappointed that they chose this outfit for the figure, but in the end the figure actually gave me more appreciation for the outfit. What a great turn of events!!
I don't know how to finish this so uhh here's one of my favourite videos on the internet
