Twitter making me fall out of love with a character?Twitter making me fall out of love with a character?Ask MFC

Okay, so I won't go into the nitty gritty details, but recently I got into this new game and fell in love with a character from said game.

I've been infatuated with them for about 3 months now and use twitter to retweet a bunch of fanart of them. It's been fun!

However, today someone got in a heated argument with me about the character I like, and they called me very unsavory things. I don't get into discussions bc I hate debates, but I replied calmly and tried to have a civil discussion. It was a short conversation and I was immediately blocked for not agreeing with them.

That entire conversation (despite being short) is stuck with me and continues to spike my anxiety. I went back to playing my game and retweeting fanart, but I can't see the character I have loved for 3 months in the same way. Not because of the character, but because i'm connecting the character to this one bad interaction.

I'm also a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person), so events that may be small like this, tend to feel 10x more magnified to me.

How do I stop myself from feeling this way? I want to continue liking this character...

EDIT; Thank you everyone for the nice replies and great advice! It's truly appreciated!! Just hearing everyone talk about their experiences has calmed my emotions. I'm feeling less anxious than when I first made this post, so I really appreciate everyone in the comments taking their time to share their thoughts and support.

If you still want to comment, I'd love to hear any more of your experiences regarding such situations. Love you MFC community! <3

dk_2503 months ago#97550021I don't regularly use mainstream social media platforms so I can't exactly relate. But what I can let you know is something I've been told, and learned from life which may help. No matter what you do/say, not everyone is going to like you (or in this case, share your opinion on a character you love). You just have to accept that they'll never see things the way you do, and move on. I think that's a sound saying, but I was actually mentioning more about a user unexpectedly harassing someone else for a difference of opinion (especially over something trivial like a fictional character). The mature thing is to block and ignore. I understand they don't have to like me, but it seems strange to me that someone else would go out of their way to tell me I'm xx for liking xx.

Shirayuki323 months ago#97447524Everyday I log onto Twitter I feel that same instant pain lol. It's a love/hate relationship where I consistently need to take breaks here and there until I eventually uninstall it. A disgusting brew of really yucky and toxic beehive mentality that's honestly just gotten worse over the years. From my personal experience who also felt these similar feelings - never let these kind of people's bullying words and toxicity get to you. Anyone who thinks this extreme and negative towards fictional characters (in my opinion) need deep self-reflection and growth from their own insecurities or issues. Unfortunately, that will take lots of time for them to learn and grow from their projecting. All you can do is turn the other direction and let them grow in time.
Hold that special character even closer to your heart! If that character/TV show/video game makes you feel safe and happy, don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise.
*Insert Meme* My day be like, so fine. Then BOOM, Twitter.

But I agree with you. Sometimes I feel like people project too obsessively over a fictional character to the point where it turns unhealthy if you don't agree with their headcanons/beliefs. I myself have deleted, deactivated, deleted my account again, etc because it just exhausts me and deteriorates my mental health. Instagram isn't any better, but my experience has definitely been more positive because it's mostly a visual platform. I also find it harder to interact on Instagram because I hardly look at my DMs and talking in the comments is usually short lived. But I always come back to Twitter because it's a great way to get live news updates and a majority of overseas artists that I follow use the platform more frequently. T _ T ;; I kinda wish there was a way to block people from certain age groups tbh ;;;

KnightAdlington3 months ago#97408391Honestly these kinds of people are everywhere and it's really hard to avoid them, you kind of just need to learn to enjoy the hobby by yourself, or with a select group of like minded friends. I usually just watch a few youtubers who talk about my favourite anime/ manga for content, because it's true that there's nothing worse when your just enjoying your hobby and some fuck comes along to tell you that what you're enjoying is problematic and you're a terrible person for liking it.
I've enjoyed reading fiction all my life, and I still read a lot of young adult fiction, but you have NEVER seen a more toxic community i swear people in it are so bored and just live off the drama off cancelling different authors for the slightest slight, everyone there is just so angry and looking for someone to hate and virtue signal against. Like when most people don't like something they don't engage with it, but young adult 'fans' are here to hate and criticize, none of them have anything positive to say. Seriously one author got cancelled for signing her name in books that weren't hers and her next book got pushed back 2 years. I jumped in, and jumped right back out to enjoying the books on my own again. Can't avoid all the drama though, I guess the reason that I making this rant is just today I was looking at the new cover to one of my favourite author's upcoming books and the first comments are like 'I will no longer be supporting this author...' and I just held my head in my hands like 'please please no I am so looking forward to reading this book at the end of the year this is what's getting me through uni please don't cancel I want them to write more.'
So yeah, at least anime hate fans aren't cancelling/ delaying/ have much of an impact on anime or manga (though what you experienced still really sucks). Seriously this kind of shit is the reason why i blink at the drama on this site.
Well, I try to do my due diligence in blocking certain keywords and people so I don't have to encounter them as often. I only have a few close friends and our interests HIGHLY differ, so that's why I'm unable to really talk about it to them, haha. But it would be nice to do as you do and find others who enjoy the same things and just have a good time.

I honestly don't know why some go out of their way to ruin someone else's day (and their own) by talking about something they hate. Of course, a mutual dislike for something is fun to talk about but with a friend since it's not really hurting or shaming anyone publicly. I think it healthier to just vent about something you don't like privately instead of arguing with another random person on the internet.

And to be fair, western fans don't have much say in anime tbh. It's because anime isn't meant for the global public, but for Japanese fans first. If it gets popular overseas, it's just a bonus, but western fans forget that it's not specifically catered to them. The same goes for DC/Marvel movies and comics. It's catered for a western audience first, so we have more influence and power over it.

And in regards to the novel, I don't really read books and I don't have the context for the novel in question, but from the info you've provided me with, it seems a little silly to 'cancel' someone over signing books that weren't theirs. It definitely sounds like a bad thing to do that probably shouldn't have happened in the first place, but I think a genuine apology with a reassurance that it would never happen again should be okay. I feel like people forget that we've all done things we aren't proud of, but we should be kind to others if they mess up and are willing to learn and fix their mistakes. After all, wouldn't we want the same if *WE* mess up?

ueggg983 months ago#97414167its ok, you can say genshin impact....
either way i completely understand this... a lot of younger anime fans nowadays become so attached to characters they start to project onto them and its quite alarming... reminds me of when i was a teenager myself during the prime of tumblr kinning >___> that was an experience...
anyways, don't feel bad about it, as taylor swift once said, haters gonna hate
Haha! Fortunately I'm not a part of the Genshin fandom, but I was using some examples from it www My friend is in the fandom so I'm they keep me up to date with what's going on XD

And kinning is still a thing on Twitter tbf. I understand projecting onto a character and headcanoning them to make them more relateable to yourself (I find that okay), but it becomes toxic when you try to force it onto others. I hope you don't mind if I use religion as an example, but we can all co-exist peacefully as long as you respect everyone's beliefs. You shouldn't be telling someone else they are 'going to hell' for not believing in the same thing you do. ;;;;

denpaloli3 months ago#97408193they are not as cool as you and never will be. so sad for them that they will live in a bubble while you'll be out making friends and bonding over what you like.
if it's harmless and doesn't hurt anyone irl, it's okay.
=) have a great day.
Haha, thank you! I hope you're doing well, too! I'm trying hard to not let this get to me and I'm slowly getting over it. As I mentioned before, I'm a bit sensitive and things like this affect me heavily, but I hope time will let me just laugh it off later. I appreciate your positive vibes and comment <3

While this rings true, I still do enjoy all the non-toxic creators that just mind their own business like myself. Although that doesn't stop others from going out of their way to bully others online. (I've seen people proudly joke about cyberbullying people and I personally don't find that right). I'm not a saint or anything, but I just want to see people being respectful to one another.
