A week ago I posted this article: BLOG #51516

Boy, was it an adventure, and one I hope to NEVER repeat.

As I've mentioned, I don't have any problems paying for customs fees. But man, I really wish EMS will come back now because quite frankly, I'm sort of terrified to make another order with DHL shipping. At least with EMS, I can come pick it up at the post office, and the customs is right there 10 steps away, and I pay like 10% of the total amount. This was a whole other nightmare.

My package was blocked at customs because apparently this boy ITEM #1150396 is listed as a "restricted commodity." Lo and behold, when I get there, he was listed as having a weight of 9 KILOGRAMS. In what world is a nendoroid 9KG??? I suspect that the disparity in the documents submitted by AmiAmi and DHL is what caused the whole official process.

I went there on Saturday, got an estimate, and then told to come back on Monday because they couldn't process the documents right then. They only worked half a day (8AAM-12PM) and they said the documents will take FOUR HOURS to process.

Yes, I went to customs yesterday, missed work for half a day, and sat around in customs from 8AM to 11:45AM waiting for that damn document to release my shit.

And the kicker is, I STILL don't know what the fuck triggered this whole thing, because the customs guy didn't speak good English and thus couldn't explain to me what went wrong. So I suspect it's that whole misdeclaration of weight and the fact that Nijisanji's description says that he carries "submachine guns". I bet the customs people thought I was importing an actual gun or something, because of the weight as well.

Not to mention, they really went all in and inspected every single item in that box and charged me different percentages based on the materials that they were made out of. What the fuck? Thankfully I was able to convince the customs people of my past experiences and told them what I used to pay, but it was still slightly higher than what I would have paid if I was paying customs at the post office. Not to mention, the guy handling my documents charged me a "processing fee" (that was of course, not in the records).

Basically, my package was processed as if it was a big shipment of a business and not one that was for personal use.

I really don't mind paying customs. I don't. But don't make me miss work and wait FOUR. FUCKING. HOURS. for a goddamn piece of A4 paper so I can pay the damn thing and get the hell out. Even the customs people who inspected the box were taken aback by the fact that the item in question was a) not a gun and b) did not weigh ANYWHERE NEAR 9KG lmfao.

I have another package coming (which I'm going to pay for today), so I really, REALLY hope that nothing gets flagged in there and this doesn't happen again. I'm going to go email DHL and inform them of their blunder. I don't want nor need compensation because quite frankly I don't want to fight that battle, but I NEED to let them know to check that goddamn document declaration thing like five times before they submit it because this shit is ridiculous and I'm not going through that again.

If you guys want to vent about your customs, feel free. Let me know I'm not alone in this. Why is it so damn hard to enjoy this hobby ToT

The customs declaration form is done by the seller, not the shipping company. So you'd need to tell amiami they need to properly fill out their forms. Maybe they confused volume with weight (DHL fees are based on volume, not weight). Amimi has always been bad at declaring customs. It's one of the reasons why I don't buy from them if I can help it.

Where I am it's EMS that's a nightmare. Nothing super bad has happened to me customs wise, though I do remember them taking like a month to send my brother the piece of paper to allow him to pay his customs. I think in the end he had to phone them up to get them to send the letter.

I do remember once having to phone customs because something had happened with one of my packages, they just wanted to confirm what I was importing. It was just a bunch of CDs, and after that call package turned up fine a few days later. No idea what that was about.

marrieletsgo17 days ago#103627352Probably my biggest scare when it came to DHL customs was when my ITEM #758994 got stuck back in 2019, and I was forced to go a governmental office, sign a bunch of papers, apparently because she was too realistic and I had to declare that her usage was for solely my own use, and that i wasn't going to resell her, the whole process took an entire WEEK and I had to ship the customs office a bunch of signed papers by me and forms, I also had to pay about $250 dollars ONLY in fees because of each day she was detained. mind that I live in Mexico and ordering anything with a "human form" and using any sort of private postage can get you to suffer through what I did, I learned ever since and don't use DHL for figures anymore, at least here in Mexico, my boyfriend in the United States has never have any issue, and I usually just end up shipping my things to him to avoid being caught by a shitty customs officer that makes you do what I did. I solely use EMS when importing anything from Japan, specially figures.

Oh my god -- $250????? Holy shit, and here I thought what I went through was hell DDD: I'm glad you got her in the end, but at that point I'd just have her returned to Japan ToT Problem is here, apparently they charge $300 to return the package back to its destination... customs really be shady af in whatever country, it seems...

gwendal738-217 days ago#103627360Oh gosh, thank you for sharing your experience! Your experience seems comparable, if not worse than mine... Here, I enjoy arbitrary fees and unsure tax percentage rates OTL if I have to go next time, I won't ever use DHL again, AND I'll bring samples to the customs office so they know what freaking materials my shit are made out of and not try to charge me 39% because something is labeled as "plastic" OTL
Ooof, that's shady af!!! I've always had a great experience with DHL, but this was out of the ordinary. I'm currently speaking with customer service to get the issue sorted out so they don't mislabel my shit in the future. I figured that even if my issue is solved, they should know that I ain't letting their blunder go. I have a package through them coming that I couldn't change or store because it's with a proxy, so if I have to go through that again, I'm going to just wait for EMS and stop using them forever OTL
Aaaaaah that's nerve-wracking! I hope you still get your packages every time though ToT

I get them, it's just a lot of confusion and uncertainty before they get returned to me once I get home from work. Thankfully no one has opened any of them, yet. Would've been way worse if they did when I was buying doujins left, right, and center.

Archiwheel18 days ago#103619325I've never used DHL and this convinces me not to do so in the future. What a mess!!
The custom fees are a pain here: 21% of the total including shipping costs + a constant fee which can go from around 25€ to around 34€ if the total value exceeds 150€ which is always the case with a scale!
I had one package opened by customs one time: the Apex Yae Sakura mandarin gown. Maybe because of its weight? I guess they usually x-ray the packages but that time they decided to open it. And since the box of the figure is windowless... they opened it too!!!! Damn why do I buy a sealed figure man???
Fortunately the figure was untouched but the blister was a little damaged, like deformed by heat?? Maybe it could happen before the inspection tho. And last but not least: the bonus acrylic stand was missing!! And I paid a damn 75€ fee for that!!
The seller confirmed that the figure was sealed when they shipped it.
"Why is it so damn hard to enjoy this hobby": THIS!!!!
Fortunately other experiences are very good, like the railway taxfree delivery from China for chinese stuff (heavy resins for example).
Rant over lol

Devastator00118 days ago#103627160For me our local FEDEX is the crappy one. THey tack on alot of "extra costs" outside of the shipping cost. ($11 "storage fee" for an item that arrived overnight and was suppose to be delivered the next day + $15 "processing" fee). One time they tried charging $20 extra fees for free calendars.
Local DHL is better they never charge extras unless the item goes beyond the tax-exempt value and if it does they send an email/SMS beforehand with the breakdown. (although they tend to be pricier than fedex by around 10% but if you factor in the "extra costs" and hassle out local fedex gives it's cheaper i nthe long run =/)

Tythorith17 days ago#103627263This is quite odd IMO. I've never had an issue with DHL in my area of the US, yet my local Fedex drops off my packages to nearly every house but mine on our street.
Like, it's 3/10 packages actually get delivered to me and not to the houses next to me.

Rajke18 days ago#103595555This definitely happens everywhere. Till now only packages from Volks are problematic. They go with air freight to Schiphol and instead of customs cleared the package has been moved to an unrelated office of exchange. That office of exchange brings 2 problems: DHL considered the delivery as final delivery so I have to arrange a pickup. The second problem is that customs takes around one week for the customs clearance.
Note that a customs clearance takes around 15 minutes and exist of 3 phases. First phase is uploading the document to customs. Then customs has to decide if they want to check the package (if they want to check they have to respond within 4 hours and do the physical check within 24 hours). Third phase is the actual clearance.
I did contacted the office of exchange with the question to provide me the T1 document and a copy of the invoice which they won’t send. Volks does something wrong but no idea what.
In your case the shipper has put 2 red flags for customs. Mentioning weapons and filled in the wrong weight. Probably customs checked the possibility of your shipment that has been delivered incompletely. They must have checked if there was a second package with the rest of the weight that included the gun. Sounds farfetchd but these things happens. A difference of more than 2KG in weight is enough to assume that there is a second package.

That makes so much sense, even if we aren't located in the same country! This is a logical explanation as to why customs would do what they did. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and possibly shedding some light on my situation. I made sure to tell DHL the blunder so hopefully they don't make the same mistake. We'll see with this next shipment that I get. If it gets flagged again, I'm never using DHL again OTL
