So you can "basically" recommend me whatever you want bc I'm open for new stuff but I want to tell a little bit of background so you can maybe recommend me music that's actually my taste.

I want to find Japanese bands or anime soundtracks that are not that popular and hard to find or very niche. Especially openings are very easy to find but the good anime OST's are left behind. An example: LiSA is an awesome singer, very popular and got an award for the 1st OP of demon slayer "Gurenge". Don't get me wrong she does awesome stuff but I think she has had better music to deserve an award like in Angel beats she actually sings Yui's Songs in the Band Girls Dead Monsters and I love these songs much more of her but they are not so we'll known like the demon slayer or SAO Opening.

So I'm thinking of songs/bands that have like artistic masterpiece quality that when you listen it you get a very special feeling and they don't get boring no matter how much you listened to them. Some songs/bands that I would recommend that give me this feeling are:

Songs from Egoist (aka guilty crown soundtracks)
Angels of doom and komm suesser Tod from Evangelion
Almost every Yuki Kajiura song (known from anime like Noir or Madoka)
Dororo Op 1 Kaen by queen bee (bc i liked the op so much I fell in love with this Band)

I also got into pretty many good bands/songs through playing OSU and would recommend these:

Foreground eclipse (metal covers from the game touhou)
Illion - Ai waguma

So I'm not that into high pitched happy anime voice songs and I prefer rock or metal songs but also unsusual/artistic ones.

Feel free to recommend me whatever comes into your mind!

Edit: Thank you all very much for your suggestions and feel free to add more! I will listen through all the artists you recommended me. Some of them I also already listen to but that means that you really have a good taste and know what I'm searching for.

ONE OK ROCK!
They're currently on tour in the U.S. right now. I saw them at all three of their stops in Texas last week and they were amazing, as always. Their new song "Vandalize" is being used as the theme song for Sonic Frontiers so I think a lot of people have been discovering their music these past few weeks. I can't wait to see them one last time on this tour when they hit up LA next month.

OOR doesn't do anime songs but they've performed songs for live-action adaptations, such as Rurouni Kenshin and Kingdom. Their live performances are out of this world. Highly recommend!

+1 for the Nier and Umineko Soundtracks. The two OSTs feature some impressive pieces. As an aside, it's been nice listening to the other suggestions in this thread.

I'll add some math rock into the pool with Uchu Conbini and JYOCHO. The two aren't exactly in-line with OP's interests, but I'd say they both tick that unpopular/niche criterion. These are a lot more chill:

JYOCHO - "Sugoi Kawaii"

Eunnie2 months ago#114032695I'd suggest you look into Keiichi Okabe's works, he is most famous for his work in NieR:Automata.
I also suggest this. The NieR soundtrack is a masterpiece.

lowroller2 months ago#114032270I really like 80s Japanese city pop. It's an entire genre and if you look it up on YT you will find a ton of results. Some pretty noteworthy examples that I can think of off the top of my head (many people probably know these already):
"Plastic Love" - Mariya Takeuchi
"Telephone Number" - Junko Ohashi
"Stress" - Chisato Moritaka

These are good. Add Tatsuro Yamashita to this list, and you have a good start.

Here's a few of my favourites.
- Yutaka Yamada - Composer
- Fox Capture Plan - Jazz/Rock/Instrumental - God Tier
- nano.RIPE - Rock - They're in a lot of Anime
- Fern Planet/Rick Rack - Rock - Lady trio sadly broke up
- Yorushika - Rock/Pop - Amazing Voice
- Eir Aoi - Rock/Pop
- Daoko - Pop/Hip hop
- Eve - Pop/Rock
- Sakanaction - AltRock/Electronica
- Asian Kung-fu Generation - AltRock/Rock

RAHHHH IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE. If you like soundtracks!

I focus on Japanese soundtracks. I'd suggest you look into Keiichi Okabe's works, he is most famous for his work in NieR:Automata. If you've played the game, his song titles have more meaning in it which makes it so intuitive and more special! His work on Automata is an experience, spectacular, and everything else. So I will give examples that are not as popular with his work.

Keiichi Okabe + Kuniyuki Takahashi - Stars and Flowers (Yuuki Yuna is a Hero)
Keiichi Okabe - Banquet of Massacre (SINoALICE)

I'd also suggest Kevin Penkin, some of his work reminds me of a very good morning. I hope you like upbeat music too!
Kevin Penkin - Days in the Sun (Made in Abyss)
Kevin Penkin - Tomorrow (Made in Abyss)

These two people are my lifeline, and their music has so much sentiment to me. (please watch made in abyss season 2. last episode released today). Also, Yu-Peng Chen's work in Genshin Impact is amazing too!

One of my favourite Japanese bands is Wagakki Band! They've only done one anime song so far (Aria of Life, the OP for Mars Red), so I guess you could call them lesser-known in that regard, but they started out doing covers of Vocaloid songs and have since produced several albums of original songs. Their style is a blend of rock and traditional Japanese music, which I think creates a very unique sound, and their music is very energetic and beautiful! I highly recommend them.

I used to know a bunch more but I can't think of anything else; theres one other song in particular I wish I could remember.. I'll edit this comment if I think of it.

Monochrome Trouble from the Bastard!! OST - metal would've suited the series more but I love the intro and used to have it as my ringtone

I think she’s pretty popular, but ado is the first one that came to mind. lol

MeatwadBishoujo eyy lemme get the reuben!
Space Dandy of course isn't unknown, but I feel the soundtrack doesn't get NEARLY enough credit for how good it is (at least in comparison to Cowboy Bebop by the same director). If you dig electronic, groovy, whatever really, it's for you.

From here I'm gonna add videos to supplement so I'll put it under spoilers to save space:

Anime/Anime-adjacent

View spoilerHide spoilerFor the new One Piece movie they created a couple of music videos for the new character, Uta, whose singing voice is by Ado. And holy CRAP is her music amazing. The videos are great too, though my favorite has to be this one. I'm anxious to watch the movie because I wanna know more about her!!! Waaa!!!!!

As for other artists ummmm uhhhhhhhhhhh i listen to a lot of JP artists, Denki Groove has been a recent favorite for how fun their videos are, I know they had a song for Devilman Crybaby but the superior one imo is Shangri-la for anime songs, it was featured in an anime called Kuuchuu Buranko and I absolutely LOVED a cover of it as a kid by COOLON, only realized it was a cover like... last year, maybe. Either way their MV for this is nuts and I love it.
For NON anime songs by them (afaik) gotta go with N.O. because there's frankenstein in it. idk I just like how he's walking around in it its fun

I know Monkey Majik has done anime stuff before but I'm not really even sure what they did lol. They're made up of 2 Canadian brothers and 2 Japanese members and were formed by teachers in the JET Programme, their story is pretty neat. Favorite video has to be this as I was an international student and all of the Japanese/English puns about being an international student. Their songs are fantastic sounding imo, they can sing in both English and Japanese and it flows so well. Also will recommend Change as it features some kickass shamisen.

Non-Anime

View spoilerHide spoilerRecently discovered this artist and love their videos, however Sailor Mun-Taro has to be my favorite sounding + the tokusatsu fighting/outfits + the obvious reason from watching the video. I love her and and she's living her best life...

idk who this is but i like the video a lot :)

I can't even remember how I found this video but I LOVE the stop motion, and it's super catchy.
EVERYBODY SAY!
Also have to go with the chef cooks me, this was animated by AC-Bu (the team behind Bob Team Epic) and I love how experimental they got with this video. Plus, once more, it has a really fun track with it, I don't know much about the band but both songs I've heard from them I've really enjoyed.

Not Japanese but animated cool and sound good so watch video :)

View spoilerHide spoilerLove Mcbaise. Videos are animated by one of the members of the band (Mc bess) who is just fantastic at everything he does pretty much. Super chill and wonderful to watch.
