Shining Wind - Clalaclan Philias - 1/8 - Armor ver. (ALTER)Shining Wind - Clalaclan Philias - 1/8 - Armor ver. (ALTER)

Sculpting 8/10

Alter, like always delivers an excellent and detailed sculpt.

-The hair is very detailed and gives a fluid sense of motion. However, it is still sculpted in rather large clumps compared to some other alter figures such as momohime. The sculpt on the hair is average for Alter but exceptional for the figure industry.

-Proportions are perfect. No part of the body looks awkward. There are no awkward angles. The body is about 7-7.5 heads tall which is pretty long, but that's a stylistic choice. I personally think bodies 7 heads tall look the best.

-It's obvious that the main attraction of this figure is the ruffles on her dress. They are indeed excellently sculpted. I do think that more detail could possibly go into these however. The wrinkles are not as sharp and well-defines as I would like.

-Besides the small problems mentioned above, the face is the largest of the problems. Even so, it really isn't a big issue at all. The problem is that the area from her mouth to the bottom of her chin (the bottom half of her face) is SLIGHTLY too long. This could just come down to a matter of preferences though.

Painting 10/10

The painting is flawless. Being so, there is nothing really to be said about it.

-All colors are extremely precisely put in.

-Shading is subtle but still noticeably present. The dress has many beautiful shades of white.

-The only concern might be her armor which looks a little too plasticy and not metallic. I guess they were trying to go for the metallic shine but all that came out was a plastic shine. This is really nitpicking though.

Posing 7/10

Given the bulkiness of her dress, posing possibilities were limited. Alter has still managed to give her an interesting pose despite having her standing upright on two feet. This is done by the subtle positioning and angling of her arms and legs. Still, the pose is average.

Base 5/10

The base is simply a slab of cheap white plastic. It has two things sticking out to plug the figures feet into. The figure is relatively stable on the base, but since it is so heavy, it still wobbles slightly.

Packaging 9/10

The white packaging works very well for this figure. I actually found myself looking at the box a lot. I think it has to do with the color scheme chosen.

Enjoyment 7/10

This is obviously a top notch figure. If that's true you say, then why give it a 7/10 in enjoyment? The answer is because it is SUPER fragile. The top parts of the dress are of some kind of crispy, thin plastic as are her crown and the straps on her shield. I feel like the tiniest bit of force would snap these off. In addition the angle that she holds her shield is fixed. It cannot be adjusted.

Weighted Average (Sculpting and Painting count for more) 8.75/10

I would definitely recommend this figure if you can find her at any sort of discount (even 10%). However I don't think she is quite worth full price.

Personally, I find it really unhelpful that over 3/4ths of reviews end up rating the figure between 8-10. After reading them, I still have no idea about how good the figure actually is since every figure basically gets a high rating.

If you disagree with how I rate, that's fine. I'm just trying to be helpful for people who might be deciding whether to buy a figure or not.

KaminaMy ratings are not relative, meaning that I don't rate figure quality as a normal distribution with 5/10 being average. If I rated figures this way, then yes Clalaclan would be 9.5/10 for sure.

My ratings are absolute with 10/10 being absolute perfection and 0/10 being horrible. Clalaclan is still far from absolute perfection. So in this sense, she does not deserve a 9.5/10.

With so many reviews using relative rating your review using absolute rating misinforms readers who are accustomed to the more common rating scheme.
Most people would skim your review, miss your "weighted average" and see that you gave Clalaclan a 7.7 out of 10 and would likely assume you think she's somewhere in the middle of "awesome" and "average"

Since a review is a subjective thing and personal it'd be impossible to always come to an agreement: some people love certain figures other people hate. It's part of collecting.

Reading your review and seeing how you scored her the two don't add up to me. You talk about how amazing she is and how well executed she is - which definitely doesn't lead the assumption most readers will make if they skim your review. Even with an absolute scoring system I feel the numbers don't add up to what you're saying in your review.

Perfection is also a subjective thing, regardless of what it's being applied to. One person may think that Clalaclan is absolutely perfect and based on your comment you have a much higher ideal for what perfection is when it comes to figures. Both opinions would be right in my mind since beauty is in the eye of the beholder so to speak.

PlasticFantasticI don't think your grading reflected what you were writing. You say she's an excellent and detailed sculpt and gave her an 8. I am not following your logic. I'm not saying clala's a 10/10 but she's one of the more masterfully executed in Alter's line and I don't feel even your weighted average reflects this.

I concur that Clalacaln's sculpt is utterly amazing, definitely far from a 8/10. While the figure overall might not be a 10/10, her sculpt certainly is. And her pose is static but powerful. I'd say she's more of a 9.5 overall, just because of how masterfully she is made. I mean, in terms of her skirt there's really no figure that comes close aside from maybe Alter's Chua and Saber Lily, who were both sculpted by the same guy!

KaminaYou think I'm being too harsh in this review? I gave it an 8.75/10 overall. What would be the point of reviews if I just gave every Alter figure a 10/10.

I saw this figure once and she's really really beautiful!
I was wondering if I could buy it but my economical situation wasn't good enought in order to do it. She has become a dream...

The crispy plastic is ABS. This figure is HEAVY. I imagine her ABS content is pretty high to keep her from collapsing under her own mass.

I cannot agree with you giving this sculpt an 8, this figure's sculpt is so intricate, and those ruffles were sculpted by the best in the business, which is part of why her pricetag is so high. Her sculpt alone is worth at least a 9. Comparing her hair to Momohime isn't overly fair since they're done in two different styles. Comparing Clalaclan to MF's line of shining girls her hair fits the style well (MF Kureha is a good example of this)

I do agree her face is a little long, I took another look at mine to check. And she is very fragile, but then again comparatively most PVC figures (esp the ones with tiny details) are fairly fragile. The ABS is brittle, this adds to her fragility.

Overall I think a good review, I feel Alter could have done more with her base, maybe a frosted clear plastic with her emblem impressed into it (to keep it plain and subtle without being so glaringly flat) would have suited her better. I feel too detailed of a base would have taken away from the focus on the ruffles on this darling.

EDIT:
After further thought I decided I wanted to add to my comment. I take back what I said about this being a good review. While Clalaclan's pose may not be "actiony" it shows good motion and she holds excellent presence given that she is literally covered in fluffy dress and armour. She also displays well from many angles, and with the option of being able to remove her shield you have the ability to showcase even more of her amazing sculpt.

Also I feel giving her base a 5 is unfair. Yes it is plain, but it supports her very well and given just how heavy this figure is, good support is absolutely the most important thing this base needs to do. The base does not detract away from her - this figure would look too cluttered and busy with too detailed of a base, and compared to some of the other slab like bases out there, at least this one has a nice lip detail instead of simply ending.
