Today, I decided to do a review of Matou Sakura, Alter vs. Griffon. I recently acquired the Griffon one and it has kept me in her grip ever since. But Alter is known for it's quality figures. So, which one is the best?

☆ Face off ☆

Comparing the two figures, the first difference I noticed is the style of the face.

The Griffon one is quite special. She has a bit empty and dreamy look with a touch of innocence. I really like the face and expression, even though it's not quite like the official artwork.

Looking at the Alter one, its closer to the original artwork, but at the same time also a bit more common and generic. The Alter one has a second face (mouth open). I like the first one better, but the second ain't bad.

Both faces are high quality, but Griffon is the winner for me. To go even further, it's the best one I have in my collection. Konomi is a close second.

☆ BO_Obs ☆

Ahem... I couldn't help noticing that Alter has, how shall I say it delicately, put more focus on the boobs. They are more present here. Griffon's version is a bit more elegant in this regard. Both figures are equal here.

☆ Pantsu ☆

Well, that's an easy choice. The Griffon one looks really sexy and has some nice detail, while the Alter one is just plain.

It should be noted that while both have a semi cast off (for the pantsu), neither are really suited for it because of the way the dress is locked into the shirt. That is bit of a downside.

☆ Posing ☆

Now back to a bit more serious topic: the posing. Griffon's posing really complement her face. Having her left hand delicately pushing her hair away. It's all in synergy.

Alter's posing is more energetic, more dynamic. I like the design of her left hand. It also gives more gravity to the pose. The belt adds further motion to her pose.

The Griffon and Alter poses are completely opposite of each other. Regardless there is no clear winner here.

☆ Sculpting and Painting ☆

Let's look a bit further to the sculpting and painting besides the face. Both Alter's and Griffon's look great. I really can't find a fault in either one. The clothing is also well done. I personally like the Alter one more. Griffon's school uniform does look a bit plain. Although the sleeves have a nice finishing touch.

☆ Base ☆

Another easy choice. Griffon wins by a mile here. Alter's is very plain and basic, while Griffon's is delicate and stylish. Incidentally, a base is not required for the Griffon figure.

☆ Packaging ☆

Both boxes are common and don't have anything that stand out, except for the bad English the Griffon one has (see picture). XD

☆ Problems ☆

There is a problem with the Griffon figure when removing the skirt. You can easily remove the skirt and the skirt fits well, but the black paint inside the skirt is leaving its mark on the figure. Fortunately, you can remove it with by cleaning the figure.

☆ Alter vs Griffon ☆

So, which figure wins? First I will say that both figures are awesome and definitely worth it. Both highlight the different strengths in Matou Sakura and both have their own style (one that works). But in the end Griffon is the winner, albeit barely.

KEY-FanStill, I wouldn't get both of them, as I dislike castoffable figures x)

Why do you dislike cast off figures? Just curious.

Couldn't care less about the base. So for me it's a draw xD

anime247What's your opinion on this figure then? Do you also find it pastel/clay-like or does it indeed seem better than normal?

It's definitely better than normal - I agree with the reviewer that it has a more faithful character and a better base, but you can see a small amount of what I was talking about if you take a close look at the hair on the 1st pic.

MaestroWow, Griffon's stepping up their game, even though personally I find some of their stuff has a kind of pastel, clay-like look that doesn't seem as clean/polished to me. But that could just be my personal preference. Company fanboys aside, more skilled manufacturers are only a good thing for us collectors.

Well, both Griffon and Alter are nice. I'm not quite an expert on anime figures yet, as I have only recently started collecting them, so I don't know the reputation of all companies. But from what I have seen both companies have a nice line up of figures.

In another figure comparison Alter might be able to easily win.
