A Collector's Musings #1: The Shining series conundrum

KingPikachuKingPikachu4 years agoDiary
Good day

I always wanted to have my very own blog that involved one of my strongest passions in life: collecting toys. I am thankful to find a community as established as MFC. Hopefully I will be able to find the time to update this blog as much as possible (and hopefully procrastination does not set in >_>). But enough chit chat, let us get to the meat shall we?

I have always loved Tony Taka's design (who would not?) and the figures that are made based on his illustrations are always some of the most beautiful figures ever made. Last year, I came face to face with ITEM #81 , but at the time I did not have enough money to spare to buy her. Eventually someone else bought her and since then I have always wanted to have her. Now she is back on stock and I have a bit more money to play with.

But then ITEM #98899 and ITEM #118081 came along.

I never owned an Alter figure yet and based on research they always deliver in terms of quality...for a price. I love the details of this version and I would buy it at a heartbeat, it if were only a bit less expensive.

The Kotobukiya version on the other hand still has impressive details, a quirkier post and is more affordable (is there really a cast off skirt? I saw it on some pictures but not sure).

And so we arrive at the point where a decision has to be made and oh boy. Perhaps the big factor would be whether or not the Kureha and the Alter Mistral is worth the huge dough. That and whether the Kotobukiya version of Mistral is the best of the two (the Yamato Mistral is out of the question as I am not a fan of the pose).

With that said I would be lucky to have a week to think about it since they may already be all sold out.

I left a small poll if anyone would like to give me a bit of help.

Thank you for reading and see you next time!

PS

I apologize if my paragraphs go all places, it has been a while since I have posted anything from anywhere. Hopefully next time I would be back in the groove. ^_^

I appreciate everyone for their help and I finally decided to place an order for Kureha. Hopefully I can save up more to buy Alter Misty. Thanks again ^_^

Get Kureha; Alter Misty is still in stock (I plan to get her eventually). Kureha is really lovely and sizeable, even with age.

Kureha looks really cute and it seems you already had your heart set on her.
I'll put my vote on her. She looks so pretty and Max Factory is very good in terms of quality and design.

But basically, I'm going to say what I always do. Go with what you want and like best.
Whichever of these pretty ladies you desire most, despite the poll, go for that one.

Well, I think Alter Mistral is awesome and everyone that owns her already are pretty happy with the work Alter has done. Although, I believe that MF Kureha is rather hard to find nowadays and she is truly a beauty for an old figure. I think that if you have the chance to get Kureha, get her first. Mistral got released recently, so maybe she will be easier to find in the future and hopefully you'll have enough money to get her as well. Well, that's what I would do. Good luck!

I'm going with Misty, but I love both the Alter and Kotobukiya versions. Alter's is more stunning and dynamic, but Kotobukiya's is cuter and more endearing. Alter has amazing painting quality, but Kotobukiya, I feel are the best at faithfully converting Tony's work into figure form.

As for which Misty to get... I can't a choice out of my own power. I'd have to toss a coin. haha

Thanks.I do own Koto figures in fact all of my current figures are koto I just want to make sure which version of Mistral is best. I might run the poll till monday and take it from there ^_^

Asako (4 years ago) #1662071There is absolutely nothing wrong with Koto's shining figures. I've owned a number of them (since sold off most) but their quality is always up there. Maybe not absolute top-tier like Alter, but as you say, for the price, their quality is perfectly fine. They are gorgeous girls and if money is an issue, don't feel like you're simply "settling" for a cheaper version.
Buy without worry and enjoy some wonderful figures.
