Makster (4 months ago) #31103597Northern Fella here.
I've found that buying from retailers like Forbidden Planet is waay too pricey. The cost getting it off the shelf £45-50 is waay more than if you shop around or even import.
That being said buying at conventions allows you to haggle with the price in some cases. I bought a Bishoujo Street Fighter figure from Forbidden Planet (surprise really) after haggling them down from £45 to £38 - a great bargain when RRP it's around £60!
If you're worried about importing i.e. something goes wrong - you should spend some time looking up guides on how to buy internationally. I've been using Big in Japan forwarding for a couple of months now for small doujinshi and booth items and they've worked really well so far!
Also WOW soo many replies from UK

Thanks for the advice! You're completely right the prices tend to be quite ridiculous and half the time the boxes aren't even mint since they've been on the shelf that long :/

And yeah the amount of replies amazed me :O

KonaKona-sama (4 months ago) #31103703Hello from Scotland! I've been collecting since late 2013 and I always have the same two struggles: lack of space and the horrible import charges the UK has :')
As a result I try to order primarily from places such as amiami which allow orders to be combined as in the long run it is cheaper than buying figures separately and being hit by the vat+handling fee for each one.
I never realised there were so many UK collectors tbh but after looking through the comments I was amazed.

Same here! I thought nobody would even bother to look at my post XD

Akatora224 (4 months ago) #31103719Wow! Really surprised to see so many people from the South West area. I live in Gloucestershire now but I've lived in Swindon, Wiltshire too.
My first figure was probably back in 2005 but my collection only really started growing in the past few years.
Biggest struggle as a UK collector is definitely the shipping and import costs. Not a lot we can do about this since there aren't any reliable sellers/importers in Europe. I also have a lot of anxiety about whether my stuff will arrive safely or in a timely fashion.
The other struggle I have is space. Once your collection grows too much, it gets hard to keep everything displayed neatly.

I agree with you completely, I always worry about my parcels especially since they're worth a lot of money, I try and always get tracking on them incase anything does go wrong

But yeah I'm surprised by the amount of comments in general tbh, I thought next to no one would even see my post XD

South East - I always thought I would have to travel a long way to see another room of PVC - from the comments, it would appear not!

Exchange rate is another big pain - especially when you consider how good things used to be... It hits twice as hard because figures prices go up and the exchange rate gets worse :(

Chichi9521 (4 months ago) #31103522I'm from the UK, live in the Media City area. Besides custom fees which I'm sure every collector is aware of, I enjoy collecting figures.
I have recently cut down my collection and now only collect Vocaloid stuff or things I really like. Nice to meet you :)

Nice to meet you too ;) I tend to focus on things I like aswell nowadays as I won't have the space let alone the money to buy every figure I want XD
