Comments A piece so special that I forget I actually own it

  • AlienEmoji13 days ago#97924644I'm always down to talk about animation!!
(though my field of knowledge is more prominent in character design)
Man reading your adult swim experience makes me so unpleasantly aware that i live in a country that basically doesn't have a single animation studio

Oh yeah a lot of people at my school study to go into pre-production stuff (character design, concept, storyboarding, yadayada) and also at one point I thought I was going to go into that field... until I realized if I was going to do storyboarding for the rest of my life I would go insane. I got into motion graphics and now specialize in AE compositing and I'm much happier lol. The work y'all do is crazy!! I love talking about all of the sides (...and not throwing shade to anyone but people who actually know the industry HEHE)

Also ah... I live in an animation hub (not California) so I don't realize how close I am to actual studios... the adult swim location here does more commercial/promo and live action stuff now rather than animated show production (they still make a few, I know Gemusetto Machu Picchu's creator lives in my city) but it still has SO much stuff from when they did it was so jarring. I have pictures from the studio (I was cleared to take them) if you want me to DM you them!

AlienEmoji12 days ago#97943729Yeah lmao jojo cels tend to sell out really fast, esp if they are of popular characters (rip avdol who's been available for weeks)

AcePlatinum12 days ago#97938173Omg, you were right about animation legends...I got my first email from them and within seconds the Jotaro that I wanted got sold out, WTF. I have a feeling this is going to be a bother since I work during their release hours.....but at least their prices look decent! ^^Yeah lmao jojo cels tend to sell out really fast, esp if they are of popular characters (rip avdol who's been available for weeks)

Limmara13 days ago#97923187Wow that's so cool! I think cels and original drawings are some of the nicest items a collector can have. Having a piece of the original work in your hands seems surreal. They get so pricey though, but I think owning even one would be awesome. I also love the way you talk about Araki's art. He's really one of a kind
    I absolutely agree!! <3

Also thank you, i love talking about araki, both his art and jojo in terms of story analysis lmao

The face like a frog cel looks really cute!! it's awesome that you managed to get your hands on an artwork that origins from a work that inspired you!!

i only collect cels from shows that influenced me in some way (namely jojo and macross 7), so i definitely get your excitement about it <3

Me as a recent anim grad reading this great analysis that hits the nail on the FREAKIN head abt my feelings on sketches/concept vs final art View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://media1.tenor.com/images/6b46de82417f14ccb9d0230b9ab5ee3a/tenor.gif

This is a great read and I'm amazed you were able to find such a one of a kind item!! I've only recently started collecting animation production work when I visited Adult Swim in Atlanta and they literally just slapped a bunch of Venture Brothers genga in front of us, i'm talking 5 overfilled folders (think as wide as a textbook, maybe 2) full of work that went as far back as (from what I saw) season 2. I took about 10-15 of them (literally was a free for all) as that was all I could carry at the time, had my backpack been empty I would have taken an entire folder (manners be damned!)... also they were already heavily bent so it didn't really need to be meticulously preserved. Seeing the eraser marks, vague roughs, and in this case little notes in Korean on the sides is such a cool thing to see and really shows how much time and concentration the animators have to put into this line of work.
I still haven't collected any anime cels yet, but I did get my first animation cel from an independent animation that HUGELY inspired my work, Face Like a Frog by Sally Cruikshank!! It was released in 1987 so seeing independent cels from that period in such high quality (and for a very reasonable price directly from the artist, I think I got mine for around $70 USD? Here's an image:

It came signed and with the genga underneath, it was really neat getting to see the paint strokes on the back of the cel and then having the genga to compare it to!
I don't have any other production work as of now but I do have an autograph from Niki Yang (Adventure Time storyboard artist + voice of BMO and Lady Rainicorn) with an original sketch of BMO which I got when I was probably about 14 (it's late here but I'll probably post about it somewhere in the future) and it's been proudly framed for years.
That's about it for now but I plan to collect more in the future, I think it's really important now since productions (especially in the west) have almost exclusively moved to digital. It's a shame but at the same time a hell of a lot more productive and less prone to mistakes/horrid accidents (minus that one time with Toy Story 2 and Pixar but i'm sure they have backups on backups on backups now lol). However! There may not be as many cels and genga produced now, but there will ALWAYS be sketches and doodles! And tbh I kind of like them better lol

anyways if you ever wanna talk animation collecting hmu i'm crazy for this lmao

frankly, i think he should've done even more terrible things. i think that would be very funny.
