Comments Thoughts on prices drastically increasing?

  • i started collecting in 2015 and its at the point now where ive been simply priced out of being able to afford figures like i really want neon city ram by ssf but i just cant afford her, eventually, the high prices will stop new collectors from joining and we're already seeing older collectors leaving/stop collecting, these figure companies my end up killing the high end scale figure market

    I started off collecting older, used figurines. Some had slightly increased aftermarket prices.
    I realized that happening in this era now is just not a thing anymore. I learned my lesson after passing out on Aniplex's Ultimate Madoka. (sigh..)

    I can understand the more demand -> increase prices but it doesn't feel like we're getting the bang for our buck anymore. Like a simple 1/8 scale figure with nothing going on with the base is now like $140 - $160. $200+ if it has an elaborate base or its a 1/7.
    Then with how the pandemic turned shipping on its head , thats more $$$ to shell out.

    It sucks but that's how it is. I've always been very selective with what figurines I buy but now I'll have to start skipping out on scales I liked a lot because I can't justify the price anymore.

    This is why I mainly collect Prizes now... Even Nendoroids are going in the 60-80 USD price range nowadays which sucks since they're my favorite type of figure. And the thing is- from what I can tell, is that the prices are going to go more and more up and the quality is going to either stay the same or go down.

    My main collecting focus is figmas for japanese figures. I definitely feel like prices are going up far beyond what normal inflation might imply.

    Early figmas were < 3,000 yen for basic human figmas with standard box size and a few accessories, three faceplates. Deluxe figmas with many accessories (often double-sized boxes) were 4,500 jpy MSRP. Obviously pre-orders are even cheaper.

    Now, almost every figma, particularly Fate figmas, are 8,000 jpy for super basic figmas, and 10,000 jpy for deluxe ones.

    Over tripling the prices in 10-ish years feels insane. I will say, I compare early figmas to new figmas, particularly those after the balljoint wrists were introduced, and the paint and design quality is substantially higher than those early figmas who have very soft features. But even Saber 2.0 was 4,000-ish yen when it was first released.

    I wish I knew why. Is there a supply issue? Demand issue? Currency exchange rate? It's not like there's a particular OPEC crisis, right, like they talk about in the 70s?

    There are just too many companies that still put out prize or low quality scales and have the audacity to charge $200 for them. Sure Alter has some of the best quality around, but I'm still not sure if it justifies the $200 price range considering some of their stuff that went retail $150 and under is sometimes similar in quality. I'm so old I remember when Azone dolls were ALWAYS the more expensive option over scales. Now it's the total opposite..

    its crazy. 1/7 scale figures with a background and set piece going for $320 (im talking to you ITEM #1226098) seems to be the new norm but as much as people complain about it, people will still (reluctantly) pay those crazy amounts for them, thus showing these companies that price increases won't drive away customers and that its okay to keep raising prices.

    i'm not fine with it, but i am understanding of it. at the end of the day, figure prices have been on a constant increase for many many years. i wonder if there will ever be a point where i'm basically bought out the hobby because i simply can't afford or refuse to pay $400 for a 1/7 scale figure in 5 years time, but who knows.

    i, personally, have started reigning in my figure purchasing as of last year. Now, it's either prize figures, specific characters, or really specific figures (like futa). Shipping delays caused 2 figures I wanted to now be released next month with 2 other figures. This is gonna hurt my wallet. ;_;

    It's funny how everything (not just figures) just gets more and more expensive but salaries are stagnant at best.
