Comments Glass display vs Shelves

  • I really don't like the look of glass or clear plastic shelves. Or even dedicated figure display furniture/spaces. I try to blend them in to my rooms/furniture as it is. On top of dressers, bookcases, shelves etc. It's more fun to scatter them around and find interesting ways to pair them with either other figures or the environment around them.
Just sticking them all in one place is not fun or interesting to me. It seems odd to me, like putting all your decorations in one spot.
I can appreciate the utility of it though. I don't have a real big collection and I'm already fighting for space.

I have both and I strongly prefer my shelves. A lot of my grander figures are too big for my detolf in the first place, so I have to put them on the top of my shelves for that 360 deg view anyway. I like my figures to look like a part of my room and to preserve the overall aesthetic of my room, since a big part of the joy of owning them is to have them as a beautiful and heartwarming addition to my living space; my preference is guided heavily by this. I don't have e.g. LEDs in my cabinet either because they make me feel less at home.

I think both have a good place in my collection though, the cabinet shape is convenient with regards to densely packing figures into space (so, for displaying sets imo, not clutter), and you get the all-sides view still with the detolf style vs. (imo) prettier furniture like bookcases and wooden cabinets.

Having both is good IMO. Most of my figures are on open shelves and I enjoy looking at them with anything between. Depends on your environment tho. In my case I dust them every few weeks and it's fine.

But I don't want to dust the more fragile and detailed figures, so those are into glass cabinets.

even risk of breaking some things, since you'll have to constantly clean every little corner of your figures once every couple of days. :(
If you can't relate because your shelves don't get too dusty in three days; then you're very lucky and living in a very clean city/town. xD Unfortunately it's impossible for me.
    I agree 100%. That's also my case...

flyingteapot4 days ago#105638341That being said, it looks like I'll have to get a couple of shelves for some larger items that won't fit into the glass cabinet. So I'm thinking about looking for a place that could make me something like one of those acrylic display boxes; to put on the shelf, around the figure... I couldn't think of another solution. ^^;;And this is literally why I'm so curious about this right now lmao. Maybe a Besta with glass door or Kallax can do the job.

I like both. Iike having the glass display cases for my more expensive figures and scales, though mine don't actually do a very good job at keeping dust out (kind of defeats the purpose of them) so I'd need to get something to fix that. I still like having them though, both to protect the figures from my cats and because they basically tell people "don't touch" lol. Also they make what's inside look a lot more valuable and "refined" in the glass cases.

I still like shelves as well, though obviously the amount of dust that gets on those is a pain. I have a big cabinet with lots of scales in it and glass doors and it looks just as nice as the glass cases, just less fragile. I prefer putting prize and cheaper figures on shelves though, since they're more exposed.

I get your point though; shelves and other furniture look a lot more part of the room and less decorative or out of place than glass cases. They just look a lot more natural. I have a lot of glass cases in my room and my mom said it looks like a museum :l

I really like glass display cases......when I see them in other people's rooms lol

I think they look super clean and like a proper art display but that's probably why I'm not getting them for my own collection. I like having my figures exposed and, though I do see them as art pieces, I'm not a fan of my house looking too...sterile...I think would be the word? Plus, the dust isn't too much an issue as long as you keep a can of air around - just give them all a quick spray over before the dust has time to set!

Plus, as with others in the comments, the glass makes me nervous. I'd be too scared that I or my dog might break it >_<

Glass is way too flimsy for me. I'm sure the probability is low of getting a defective pane but I've seen pictures of shattered glass from a "few pounds of plastic figures"? No thanks.

Glass but i think wooden can go good with them too

I prefer wooden shelves. This is a very unpopular opinion in the community but I really don't like how glass shelves look, they make everything look "museum-like" and aseptic to me. I prefer figures displayed scattered troughout other things, especially books and mangas. They do get much dustier but I think shelves make them look more colorful
