Makoto Shinkai (新海 誠), born Makoto Niitsu (新津 誠) (born February 9, 1973) is a Japanese anime director, animator, and principal voice actor. A native of the Nagano prefecture in Japan, he studied Japanese literature in university. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. His favorite anime is Castle in the Sky by Hayao Miyazaki. Shinkai has been called "The New Miyazaki" in several reviews including Anime Advocates and ActiveAnime, though he calls such a comparison "an overestimation".

View spoilerHide spoiler The problem is that Shinkai tried to be Miyazaki while trying to maintain his style. This style sadly doesn't care too much about deep story and even less about character. This worked great with 5cm's slice of life short-story telling type.
I still enjoyed Hoshi Kodomo though. And especially the visuals are outstanding, right now hardly comparable to anything else.

So, finally got my copy yesterday and was able to watch Shinkai's latest movie.

View spoilerHide spoilerMy opinion could be summed up as 'It's beautiful but empty'.

Great background, great animation and great music are not enough to make a great movie. Stories and characters are certainly the most important things to make a good movie and Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, sadly, misses both those points.

In the end it kinda let me with the same filling that I got when watching the Goro Miyazaki's terrible Earthsea. I'm disappointed and always sad to see that much talents (times and money) be wasted by an obvious lake of scriptwriting skill: seriously who will believe in this love story (*cough*) between Shun and Asuna? Characters are not developed enough. Also, there are all the movie long this feeling that Shinkai tried to make some Miyazaki but he's obviously not the storyteller that Miyazaki is. He should really stick to his own style and don't give too many attention to the people that used to call him the new Miyazaki.

Well it still worth a watch for the cloud porn. *Sad*
