Just got this in, and yeah, the towel does have to be cut if you want to remove. It is one solid piece. You cut it near the ribbon like in the box art. If you just want to remove the shipping plastic, you just need to push the towel up and you will be able to get the shipping plastic off.

I probably paid too much for this from Plamoya, but it looks alright.
