Some time ago I got the Official Visual Fanbook (ITEM #500554) because the Official Artbook (ITEM #539346) was out of print (or at least not in stock anywhere). Now that it's back, I ordered that one too. In case anyone's interested how the two compare, here's an overview of general differences and exclusive content! It's written under the assumption that you're buying them for their art, not for the Japanese text, as I can't evaluate that.

General Notes

  • The paper quality of both books is good, though the artbook's is sturdier.
  • Almost all art (with the exception of a few chibis) is printed bigger in the artbook. Illustrations have a small frame (black borders) in the fanbook, whereas they take up the full width in the artbook.
  • The cover and undercover illustrations are exclusive to both. (All four are worth seeing!)
  • CGs are depicted with varying sizes in both, though which CG of the same scene (in the case of variations) is enlarged (i.e. highlighted) differs between the two books.
  • The fanbook has a lot more textual content, whereas the artbook has very little.

Artbook

  • The CG galleries are complete with regard to the variations within a scene.
  • The character section is much more detailed compared to the fanbook's. It shows all sprite variations and all the different facial expressions, as well as 1 chibi for each character (including the side characters). It also includes in-game logos and items relevant to specific characters, and the sketch detailing how to replicate Ichika's hairstyle.
  • exclusive illustrations: 2017 calendar cover (the one with the roses); merry christmas illustration
  • exclusive bonus art: a set of pink heart chibis; 3 pages of crossover chibis with other otoges (including an image of Yanagi and Amnesia's Shin); happy birthday Shiraishi; kotatsu chibis
  • exclusive bonus content: 6 pages of concept art for the sprites; 1 page of slightly altered CGs that didn't make it into the game (mostly with differences in backgrounds and special effects); 2 pages of CG and illustration sketches (less detailed than the fanbook); 2 small Yanagi images (illustration/sketch)

Visual Fanbook

  • The CG galleries are incomplete with regard to the variations within a scene.
  • The character section, while less detailed than the artbook's as far as sprites and faces are concerned, has commentary and what's either characters' comments on each other or relationship descriptions (I can't tell).
  • exclusive bonus art: a set of kitty chibis; on sale banner; mini-previews of wallpapers on official site
  • exclusive bonus content: background CGs; item overview and descriptions; relationship chart and notes (2 pages); 4 pages of CG and illustration sketches (more detailed than artbook)

I hope that helps someone decide which one to get if they can only get one of the two. I know I'm always curious about these differences, but you usually can't find detailed comparisons on the internet. :< (Looking at you, too, Code: Realize.) In my opinion, the artbook renders the fanbook obsolete if you aren't interested in the text (/can't read Japanese), though there are a few images that I prefer looking at in the fanbook, for example when the page break in the artbook interferes with the viewing experience.

feuilgarde (9 months ago) #30899738In case anyone else has been looking for this (it was sold out for many months and you couldn't really find it anywhere), it seems to be available on amazon.co.jp again!
I wasn't planning on getting it because it was sold out and overpriced everywhere but managed to grab it from amazon.co.jp when I saw it was back in stock. It's apparently very similar to ITEM #500554 but with bigger prints and maybe more arts since it doesn't have the interview section, and has 226 pages instead of 160. Regardless, I love the game and just had to grab both available artbooks. *v*
