prinn8 months ago#68680886The whole Blizzard scandal with blitzchung really put me through a Hong Kong-China rabbit hole, I had no idea how bad things were over there.
Any company that has ties with China have something to lose voicing a dissenting opinion on HK. Almost all anime figures are made in China too; to boycott Blizzard without being a hypocrite means cutting your figure hobby.

Agreed. I was planning on getting that Genji and Mei statue, but now I am gonna sell off my whole Overwatch collection. Although the #BlizzardBoycott is gonna make that harder to find buyers in the first place. So that's something else I can blame Blizzard for now. >.>

And I need to majorly cut down on my collecting in general going forward anyway. This just gives me another reason to start taking it seriously. We can all benefit from cutting down our indulgences of the modern consumerist age. I love anime and how the figures make my room look, but I have become rather tired of this endless cycle of consume product, then get excited for next product.

Regardless of how international relationships with China and the situation in Hong Kong goes, I think this event is a call for all of us to take some time to seriously reflect and evaluate our habits and views as consumers. It is we who purchase product who are the ultimate deciding factor in how the market and the businesses in it operate. If there are practices and standards in corporate culture you don't like, we as consumers share some level of responsibility for enabling it by continuing to purchase their products regardless. This is why boycotts have historically been powerful methods of rebellion or even war.

A market's ability to survive and thrive is dependent on their opportunities to sell and convince consumers to buy their product. This is why we say the phrase "the customer is always right."
