  • Kaori-chan9 days ago#95254907So uhh... how much do we want to bet that the unprecedented success of these two figures inspires Goodsmile and FREEing to release 1/4th bunny figures of Pyra and Mythra?
Cause I’d be willing to bet a lot.
I doubt Nintendo would be ok with that.

It also bugs me to see that the people indexing this as Limited/Exclusive literally 4 times are just haplessly going along with it. It's ok to bite back a little and not just take everything lying down; you'd just be a corporate drone then.

Maybe because it fits MFC's defintion of limited as per site's FAQ: about/faq/#ref-...

It only says limited number of pieces available but doesn't indicate if it would have just have one run, etc. Maybe petition to change the definition if you're unhappy with its use. And it's still true, this figure is indeed 'Limited' for this run compared to GSC's regular releases as it's clearly indicated that only 'Limited' number will be produced and PO will be stopped. It's unlike regular releases which have long deadline timeframe and PO closes at the said deadline.

P.S.: You don't know which characters I'm talking about, but just to give you an example, there's zero decent figures of Peach out there. You know, one of the most popular female videogame characters ever. Are you looking for something less kiddy? Then see how many new Jill Valentine figure we had in the last 10 years. Or are you talking about JRPGs mainly? In that case see how many new Final Fantasy statues we got in the last 20 years. Even Tifa and Lightning got almost nothing. But maybe Pyra is more popular than all of them.

Price isn't the only aspect that's relevant in this hobby. It has always been like that. Other factors add to the magic which what essentially is a sculpted piece of PVC material if it wasn't for said other aspects. Should we just pretend the term "grail" doesn't exist among serious collectors while we're at it with your line of thought?

Monetization potential wise, I don't need to know which characters you're talking about. All those examples you mentioned bar Tifa have less monetization potential so yes, Pyra/Mythra are more popular than them in that regard. And Tifa is not a valid example because she has a ton of statues. Doesn't matter if unofficial; the fact that they exist and some being real nice means the selection to pick from is more spread out.

P.S. Link me any other Limited/Exclusive item on MFC that have had 3 Limited/Exclusive re-releases since it "happens all the time". I'll wait.

Demigod_Dan10 days ago#95202147It's only good if every figure company abolished Limited entirely (which will never happen)...now it muddles the lines, and the whole thing becomes a coin toss in regards to budgeting and when to buy / pre-order something or when you can wait with less of a risk instead. If the trust in this 'sacred' age-old 'understanding' is gone, then so is the will to collect. You want collecting to be fun, and clarity is a part of that; not having to second-guess everything instead. And yes not only clarity but rarity as well; like I said, it's no fun if everyone has the same 1 "limited production" scale figure of x "top tier" popular character.

P.S. Those other characters do not compare to the popularity tier of Pyra/Mythra btw, with monetization potential being the tier subject
I don't think it's that serious. After all, this guessing about the price and availability in the after market is valid even for standard releases. You never know if a figure will raise or not in price through the years, and even if it being limited means that it won't be re-released, they can still release a new version with some minor differences (or a recolor) and call it a new release, or release a new figure from the same character that is better than the first one. This happens all the time, and it's not a recent phenomenon.

Bottom line, if you want a figure, no matter if it's limited or not, you have to ask yourself if the price they are asking is fair for you. If it isn't, it being limited or not is irrelevant, you won't buy it anyway. If it's fair, the price decreasing or raising after is not important either, you paid what you think it was worth it.

If you don't follow that line of thought, you'll feel scammed all the time in this hobby. It has always been like that.

shalnark10 days ago#95128440Many popular characters never get a single decent figure, even more dozens of them. So there's nothing weird with Pyra and Mythra having only one (soon two with the amiibos).
I understand the limited argument though. The term has kinda lost its original meaning through the years. But since all these re-releases are good for us consumers, you won't see me complaining.

    Klon Solo Rei basta!
Demigod_Dan11 days ago#95102298Also I highly doubt that because the real crime here is the fact that Pyra / Mythra have only received 1 figure each despite being 2 of some of the most popular characters in video game / anime history.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! Although I do understand your viewpoint about producing different figures of Pyra/Mithra, no other company seems to be interested in doing that.

From what I have heard about Nintendo it shall be an awful company to deal with. So I can understand figure producers tend to avoid getting licenses for Xenoblade figures. GSC at least makes four characters from Xenoblade so far and maybe they’ll even do another.

This process takes time and in 2023 when the final batch of Pyra / Mythra figures are delivered...there’ll probably be a new (and instantly sold out) version of the Nintendo Switch bundled with a new hyped game available from the aftermarket scalper of your choice.
And the “Evangelion Final” movie will be available in the West until then, making people aware that Ayanami Rei is the most gorgeous of them all and GSC still hasn’t released a single scale figure of her. Such a scandal!

Limited+Exclusive nowadays means nothing really. It's anybody's guess whether a figure is gonna get a rerelease or not. You can make an educated guess by thinking about the figure/character's popularity + which manufacturer released it.

People who constantly whine about a figure getting a rerelease sound kinda gross to be honest. Just because you can't sell this figure for 10x its price doesn't mean you got scammed. They didn't sell you the figure with a line saying "Hey, guess what? You're gonna make hella bank if you order 2 of this. Sell em off to some fans for 10x the price!" If you ordered the first release and got it then good for you. Fighting for scalper's rights is honestly baffling. Stop gatekeeping rereleases because you're angry that the aftermarket value of a figure you own has gone down. I wouldn't mind more Xenoblade 2 figures though. After getting my rereleased Pyra&Mythra that is :D

Not to tell you how to collect, but valuing your already-purchased figures based on aftermarket value is probably going to lead you to a lot of disappointment and the only one to blame would be you.
