About this picture

I want to give an extra special shoutout to my good friend, street artist and comic illustrator, Eskander Fairweather. Almost all of the graffiti here came from his skilled hand, and the rest of this handmade set was thought up while brainstorming with him. See some of his work here: dramaticepisode....

If you are curious about set process, please find my spoiler in comments below.
Thanks for all the support mfc!

I just wanted to say that this really reminds me of where I was born. I was born in Philadelphia and you would see graffiti all over the walls just like this. This pic gives me such a nostalgic feeling ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧

Please, no apologies! I'm really happy you like it and I'm always pleased to receive feedback! Living in Brooklyn, I often see people posing for photos in front of graffitied walls. (I'm sure you saw a lot of this in Philly too.) I thought it'd be fun to extend that trend to the figure world... Fortunately, I have a real street artist at my disposal :)

I plan to continue running with this concept: One of my next projects will be to have my friend help me cover my ITEM #120678 in graffiti and then I'll build a (figma) skateboard scene out of it. I'll let you know when it happens and hopefully trigger that nostalgia again. Thanks again for the support!

astarte952 (1 year ago) #6066637Wow! Good work!
Thanks friends! Your support means a lot! And my friend is psyched as well to see he's getting hits from all over the world on his wordpress site - he was all smiles about it when I saw him today.

gundamuk (1 year ago) #6047008That sure figures! In spite of the fact this had no Nendroids and sunsets it was clear from the first look that MFC would eat this up - and the fact you included the community recognition component just magnified the appeal.
I'm not really going out on a limb when I call POTM a bit further down the line.

I love that someone else appreciates bad puns. Your support on that front never fails either.
We'll see what time says about POTM; I'll only say that it would be a great and unexpected honor.

SureFigures (1 year ago) #6046776I can't believe you called it like that! I thought you were just being nice, I didn't expect to actually receive my first photo award! Nice papier-mâché work ;)That sure figures! CirqueNingyo (1 year ago) #6045930The choice of colors were wonderfully selected! Feels real. Great job to you both :D
Edit: OHMYGOD. I just noticed my name! What an honor, thanks so much!:'D

I'm so happy you enjoyed that! I was fun to draw inspiration from the mfc community.

LunarSkye (1 year ago) #6046313That's a creative background! I've never though of this Miku like that.

ptitange23 (1 year ago) #6046757Woooow !!!! :) Good job !!!
Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement! XD

Since there is such a positive response to this photo (thanks everyone!), I’ll include how the set was designed for anyone interested:
View spoilerHide spoilerThis beautiful Miku in her paint-splattered vest made her the best candidate for this particular concept. The only thing (besides Miku) that wasn’t handmade is the brick background – I bought it off eBay (search “dollhouse brick” and you’ll find a variety). The first layer of graffiti Eskander did was in felt pens, something that will absorb into the background to make it look like it’s been up a while. Then he did a layer using deco pens, something that will pop out more and look fairly new to the wall. Then he did papier-mâché posters while I stenciled in the Statue of Liberty. (And some tags overlapping the posters for authenticity.) Of course Miku’s bomb (which tells everyone who really owns the block) was the last thing to go up in bright colors to make it look like she is just leaving the scene. We wanted to represent different types of street art and also capture some of the essence of the culture, e.g. graffiti wars (when one writes over, or worse, simply crosses out another’s work). I will also admit that some of the graffiti on the wall and sidewalk was inspired by certain members of mfc – y’all know who ya are xD On that note, nobody was intentionally the victim of a graffiti battle, that is for example, if your name happens to be Star or involves the word “star,” the crossed out “Star” on the wall is not an attack on you – rather a remark on people that use overplayed tagging names like “star” with a star for the “a”.

The escape ladder (which isn’t very visible here) and the sidewalk are made from poster board. I wrapped one side of the sidewalk in thick paper and painted it yellow as the curb. Then I put glue down and sprinkled mossy-looking stuff I found in an art store to give the sidewalk some character. I also made little weeds out of wire and crinkled tissue paper to poke between the cracks and add some more urban foliage to the sidewalk. The spray-paint cans littering the ground are made from little cigarette filters wrapped in aluminum foil and shoved in a cut-up pen barrel with a little piece of rubber band sticking out the top. The asphalt is fine sandpaper colored black with a white line painted on it.

Thanks again for all the support mfc!
