So what was the very first JRPG you remember playing? I vaguely remember playing a few minutes of the first Dragon Warrior over at a friend's house back when that came out (around '89-'90), but the first I played all the way through was either Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy II (IV in Japan). I played them both at the same time back in 1993, but I don't quite remember which one I finished first.

I think my first was Breath of Fire I, although I hated how you had to grind in the beginning of BoF though. I didn't quite grasp the concept of grinding as a kid. :p
Got back to the game several years later to finally go through it.
Shortly after failing at BoF the first time, I played FF2/4 on the SNES, and completed that. Such fond memories of that game... (Avenger hax ftw; I beat it "normally" and with Edge hax throwing Excaliburs ^^)

In europe we got our first RPGS in the late 90's, I'm not really sure but my very first was a rather crappy game named "Mystic Quest" on the Super Nintendo in 1996. I remembered when I saw it was turn- based battle system, I just hated and wanted to discard it quickly. After this experience I swore I'll never buy that kind of game anymore. Of course there was Secret of Mana, I really loved this game because it was very good and unique, plus the battle system was action based. In 2000 I bought FFVIII and dramatically changed my mind on RPG, and soon it became my favorite genre. After that, I wanted to buy all FF and games not released in Europe in that time like Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, Xenogears etc...

Today I almost only play J-RPG...What a twist of fate.

I believe the first one I ever played was Breath of Fire 2. I had no idea how to play an RPG and didn't get very far. Next, I played Final Fantasy 6 and Super Mario RPG and finally got the hang of it.

Pokemon, and then Kingdom Hearts, and then Final Fantasy Tactics... if my memory serves me.

Magi Nation came earlier than KH, but that's actually not a JRPG.

Golden Sun rocked everyone with a GBA, else you should just shoot yourself now if you didn't played it and you had one, seriously.

Anyway, my first JRPG was Lufia. (Officialy it's Lufia II: Rise of the Sinestrals, but part I never got released outside Japan/USA so we in Europe got kinda F*cked since you didn't had that much JRPG's on the SNES.)
Lufia was a real blast and I've played like a dozens of times and I'm still playing it on my SNES on my HD screen, which looks a bit odd, but you can rescale it. Anyway I don't think Harvest Moon counts as an JRPG since it's more of a simulator I guess? Since I got that one earlier If I remember my SNES games correctly.

[EDIT] SakuHelios isn't your signature too large?

During the NES days I remember playing Dragon Warrior I that I borrowed but never beat. Argh was that old English style of text annoying with "thou art..." Anyways the first one I beat was probably FF2 (IV) for the SNES back in the early 90's when it came out.

Cool you guys had FF for the SNES, they never made it to Europe during that time. We had to wait for remakes or ports to the PSX and/or handhelds. :X

    AFanCorpJRPGs... does Pokemon count?
LOL. I actually can't remember that far back (and for my age it's kinda sad too). I didn't play any on my N64, which was my first console so I think it's safe to assume Pokemon Crystal. On an actual console it would have to be Harvest Moon for GC. If that counts as an RPG.
