Hello
I need so advice.

I have two preorders of the Xenoblade 2 - Nia - 1/7 (Good Smile Company) Figure one on Amiami and one on the UK Store Gamersheek. I plan to give one of them to someone who has asked me. I assume the Japanese one will be cheaper, I did do research and maths and estimate calculations but I have no idea if what I read was right.

I wanna have an idea before the payment request comes next week or whatever. The gamersheek order is £254.95. Based on my estimation of Items similar to Nia and their shipping I think it will cost me £214+ and whatever courier charge.

I know its 20% of the item and shipping if the item value is over £135 so I been following that line of thought in my maths and a percentage calculator.

cost for overseas deliveries needs to include vat and a handling charge

Parcel force handling charge is £12

Vat is 20% which includes the shipping charge as well if over £135

So to calculate if over £135 for the figures will be

Figure Cost + Shipping Cost = Total for vat charge at 20%

Then add handling charge.

As example lets say your figures are £150, shipping is £30 then total would be

£150 (figure price) + £30 (shipping) = £180, vat then is £36
so
£180 + £36 (vat) + £12 (handling) = £228

Obviously your amounts will be slightly different but just remember that the shipping fee is also in you vat calculation

hope that helps

Edit : just looked at the figure, I am estimating from GSC will be around £240 total
GSC, although their shipping fee is fixed they tend to put the actual shipping fee on the customs form, so plus with they charge more to account for the shipping the figures can end up different to what you might expect, looks to be slightly cheaper from GSC but there is not much in it.

The shipping cost is no longer included in the the import cost.

The cost of the Nia figure is 26,000 yen = £150
Shipping will be at least 6,000 yen for EMS

The import cost is £12 handling fee + 20% VAT of the item only.

£150 + £30 (import VAT) + £12 (handling fee) = £192
I have not include the shipping cost in the total as it's just a guess.

You pay vat on the shipping cost
See
www.gov.uk/good...
which indicates

You pay VAT when you buy the goods or to the delivery company before you receive them. If you have to pay VAT to the delivery company, it’s charged on the total package value, including:

the value of the goods
postage, packaging and insurance
any duty you owe

So yes you do pay vat on the shipping cost

Also from the same page

Customs Duty
You’ll be charged Customs Duty on all goods sent from outside the UK (or the UK and the EU if you’re in Northern Ireland) if they’re either:

excise goods
worth more than £135
If you’re charged Customs Duty, you’ll need to pay it on both:

the price paid for the goods
postage, packaging and insurance

So that is why you need to be careful, the amount of vat/customs you pay on a parcel from GSC will be based on what they pay for shipping not the standard charge you pay GSC to deliver, the two are not the same.

Edit:
Just found a which article that indicates the same

I have never paid VAT on shipping since the UK left EU, I have only paid it on the item and even the figure I have at Parcelforce, with import charges are only on the item, as if this was true almost every figure I buy would incur import cost as most figures are over £135 with shipping and when I pay VAT via IOSS I only pay for the items and not the shipping. I even sent a letter asking border force about it and they confirm you pay VAT on the item now. I even just checked my old paper work from the last figure I have with import cost from and it's only on the item.

Item value: 27300 yen = £157.00
Import VAT = £32.64
Handling = £12
If shipping was included it would be around £35 VAT.

I really do think it can be hit or miss when it comes to paying import VAT as I here a lot people paying VAT when they shop at Mandarake as they mark everything as gift but I never once been charge import VAT when the item is less than £135.

If there was some consistency then it would be easier to work out, all I can quote is the rules published and what I have paid, however if you can work it out then you are lucky.

Example of some recent charges

Illya Wedding dress recent arrival cost me just over £28 in customs charges
Miku Solwa, similar price cost me £7, yes that is correct Seven pounds.

both were marked as sale of goods and both were around 23,000 yen from the retailer, both delivered by parcel force, how two similar priced items can have such different customs charges is beyond any rules that should be applied.

Yes, VAT is supposed to be charged on the shipping, but customs is customs and often doesn't bother to whack in the shipping cost even if it's present on the paperwork. Occasionally they will though lol.

It's very strange that one got hit with only £7 customs charge, unless it was when the Yen crashed, I know that board force have they own exchange rate they use for a full month and then it changes next month.
I wish that they just say that anything over £150 should have VAT applied and anything under shouldn't whether it's marked as goods or gift and that it's the item only and not shipping and remove the handling fee as it's just another way for shipping companies to make more money by doing next to nothing. I think we all know that someone sticking a label on a parcel and sending a letter asking to pay custom charges does not cost £12, and the letter should arrive the next day, mine arrives 3-4 days after the parcel arrives at the depot, and the customs payments are made automatically and they change the tracking number to a UK one.

I still haven't gotton the payment request from amiami yet.

So I wanted to ask, because amiami says shipping might be high.

If the shipping is really expensive could that take me up to or over £250 for the figure and customs?

Personally I'd go gamerseek, it's an independent shop and I really try avoid cancelling at late notice, amiami is a larger company and will be OK. You haven't included shipping or VAT when you do the price difference isn't that big but if the figure comes broken it'll be much easier to ship it to gamerseek for a replacement, but do what works best for you.

This is probably to late but shipping via EMS is over 8k yen and air parcel is 7.5k.

The chance of getting a replacement is very low when buying from local website as they buy figures to what people order, if you lucky and someone cancels their order you can get a replacement but most of the item they offer you a refund.
