Once customs duty gets involved and item value increases it gets pretty nasty.

As an example if you buy something for £100, pay £20 shipping and there's £10 declared as paid for insurance you'd be looking at £26 VAT as VAT is due not just on the £100 item value but the £30 shipping/insurance (sometimes Royal Mail will just charge £20 VAT as it seems they don't care too much about calculating it properly)

This example isn't big enough to qualify for duty but on figures it's 4.5%.

But that 4.5% is not on the value of £100, or even the total of £130 it's on the total of £156 - You basically have to pay a tax on your tax when you spend above a certain point.

Ouch. The worst I've had to pay was about £250 on a Volks SD17. I was fully expecting it, and I have no regrets about the purchase, but it was not a happy day when I got that letter...

I find myself feeling lucky now! I usually buy via proxy to avoid customs but had to go direct to Volks this time >_>

I usually buy Volks dolls second hand, but that one second hand cost more than getting him new from Volks plus customs charges, and I was fortunate to 'win' the chance to buy him in their lottery.

Hello all, anyone know the current waiting time for surface mail? Just realised I stupidly picked this shipping method as opposed to registered SAL, which is what I usually use, meaning this is the first time I'm using surface mail and have no idea what to expect.

60-90 (calendar) days. I've only ever done surface once. It was closer to the 60 than the 90 for me, but I asked about this before, and some people reported back they got things in 90 days...

With that kind of time frame, I don't think you really can say what the current 'parcel weather' is with surface.

Oh boy, what a wait. That'll teach me to actually use my eyes next time...

Not sure if I should consider myself lucky that it was dispatched out of the port about a week ago, but I have a feeling if 60-90 days is the norm that's probably my waiting time for this package too.

Anyone had any issues from ParcelFarce lately? They have held my package now for a week and it hasn't gone anywhere. Just sitting in the Manchester Depot which I can actually get to and go pick it up myself. Plus there is obviously custom charges but the tracking doesn't even say held due to me paying them.

You should be able to call the local depot and pay the customs over the phone, as long as you have the tracking number they don't mind. Well at my local they don't at least, they should schedule it for the next day then.

I did, but with the clearance of me paying the charges. Apparently a glitch occurred where my payment cleared, but it didn't update in the system the depot uses.

They're reasonably responsive on Twitter, usually takes half a day, but they will help you with your parcel (I usually get the payment number off them, so I can pay online). Or if the depot is near, you can go there. Fixed the above issue by DMing them on Twitter

Alright, so just as an update in case anybody else is expecting anything via surface mail at some point, this package is due for delivery today, which means it's taken about 2.5 months to get here once shipped.

    Two words: never again.

I am far too impatient to wait this long for a delivery.

How does Shipping Options and Import Tax work if I order from an MFC user based in the US?

    Is it very expensive?

Also, what courier service is used in this scenario?

I've never ever ordered anything outside the UK/EU so I'm new to this...

    Thank you!

In my most recent experience, the service was USPS Priority Mail and once it got to the UK it was handled by Parcelforce. It reached the UK in like 2 days, took about a week to clear customs and reach my local depot so I could pay customs fees and get it delivered.

Cost wise it was shipped for like $60. Customs fees are applied the same way to any import from outside the UK/EU.

Cheaper options take longer and may not have tracking. I ordered a pin with a cheap shipping option that had tracking and it only updated when it left the US and when it was delivered, kinda like how Registered SAL works when ordering from Japan. Took a whole month to reach me.

Thank you for letting me know:)

Is ParcelForce a reliable company? Have you ever had a problem with them?

    They are generally good.
I haven't had any serious problems with them. The worst I had was a mishap where their system didn't register my payment for customs fees but a call to their customer services fixed it.

Depends what you're buying and how much. 20% VAT + handling fee for >£15 and <£135. Above that, and you'll get duty, which will be another few % on top. If it's being sent via USPS, then it'll come through RM or PF.

Note that the VAT also applies to the postage - and if the parcel goes via PF, they will generally do it properly. PF charges £11.50 for handling and RM charges £8. If the item is sent by an express service or larger than SAL small packet, it will go via PF. Else RM.

As for their service - PF won't deliver on a Saturday, unless you pay them extra to do so. I've had um, variable parcel blokes from PF myself. The other annoyance is the Parcelforce depot *may* be further away than the RM one. Mine is an hour's drive away, so it's not feasible for me to go collect.

Paying the fees is easy enough - you get what looks like a payslip, and then you type in the ref # and pay. If you're super-impatient, you can ask them on Twitter for your payment ref, once it gets to your local depot. You can select which day they deliver on, which can be convenient if you're ever home midweek. Only had them not do so when their system fucked up and didn't register my payment (probably similar timing to the person above)
